The old trick of hiding a key under the doormat or in the nearest flower pot might feel clever, but it’s the first place anyone with bad intentions will check. These spots are “common knowledge” now—hardly hidden at all.
If someone watches your routine and learns when you’re usually away, finding that spare key is like getting an invitation. They don’t even need to break in; they just walk in. It also complicates insurance claims if there’s no forced entry.
A safer option is to leave a spare with a trusted neighbour or family member, or use a decent quality, well-hidden key safe with a code (not in plain view).
The idea of a backup key is fine—it’s the obvious hiding place that turns it from a safety net into a serious risk.
