How can checking door locks and latches once in a while prevent sudden “door stuck” emergencies?

Door locks and latches wear out slowly. At first, you might need a tiny wiggle to close the door smoothly. Then you start pushing a bit harder. Eventually, one day it jams completely—usually when you’re in a rush or someone is stuck inside a room.

If you take a moment every few months to notice how locks are behaving, you can catch these early signs. Does the key turn smoothly? Does the latch align with the strike plate easily, or do you have to lift the handle a bit? Is there a scraping sound?

A small adjustment to the plate, a drop of lubricant, or replacing a weak latch before it fails completely is much easier than dealing with a stuck door and calling someone to break it open.

Paying attention when things start feeling “not quite right” is the best way to avoid dramatic emergencies later.
